The Hyde Church, Colindale

The impetus for this project was a formal partnership between the Hyde United Reformed Church and the Chinese Church in London, with whom the buildings had been shared.

The requirement was for additional meeting rooms, as well a general upgrading of the WC accommodation sandwiched between the church and hall. The solution was to demolish the existing WC block and form a new top-lit “Meeting Place” in its place, and to construct a new extension at the side of the church to house a Community Hall as well as Kitchen and WCs serving both areas.

A particular design issue was the 1.5m change in level between the front and back of the site. The new and existing spaces are linked by means of a ramped corridor, which is again largely top-lit. This project was completed in October 2007.
